The piano step in Black Ops 7 Paradox Junction is widely considered the most frustrating part of the entire Easter egg. You need to spawn a specific zombie, turn her with Brain Rot or a Psych Grenade, find 8 glowing notes scattered across the map, then play them in the correct order on a piano with a time limit. If you mess up, you wait a minute and try again.
We have run through this step dozens of times across our mod team, and every single person flagged it as the most annoying step in the full EE. Below is the full walkthrough with screenshots for every note location.
How the Piano Step Works
The code is always the same. Every game, every attempt. You do not need any music knowledge to complete this step. The in-game piano shows 8 numbered keys on screen (1 through 8, left to right). Just press them in the right order.
| Press | Key Number (on screen) | Music Note |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | 8 | A |
| 2nd | 6 | F |
| 3rd | 7 | G |
| 4th | 5 | E |
| 5th | 6 | F |
| 6th | 5 | E |
| 7th | 3 | C |
| 8th | 5 | E |
The key numbers are what you actually interact with in-game. The music note names (A, F, G, E, F, E, C, E) appear on the wall above the piano, but you do not need to know what they mean. Just match the numbers: 8, 6, 7, 5, 6, 5, 3, 5.
If you just want the code and already know the setup, that is all you need. The rest of this guide covers how to get to the piano and set everything up.
Spawning the Piano Teacher
The piano step becomes available right after the swings cutscene disappears. Most players reach this point around round 16-17, which works out well because a dog round is usually coming up soon. Here is the process from start to finish.
Step 1: Grab a Psych Grenade
Before heading to the backyard, make sure you have a way to turn the Piano Teacher. The easiest option is a Psych Grenade from the Crafting Table. You can also use Brain Rot ammo mod if you already have it on your weapon.
Step 2: Wait in the Backyard
Head to the Green House backyard on Destroyed Nuketown. This has to happen during a normal zombie round. Dog rounds do not work. The Piano Teacher will not spawn during a Hellhound wave no matter how long you wait.
The ideal approach: save one zombie at the end of a round, turn on the Rampage Inducer if you have it, and head to the backyard. This gives you a controlled environment where you will not get overwhelmed while waiting.
Stay in the backyard for a full 60 seconds. Do not leave, do not wander off. After 60 seconds, the Piano Teacher zombie hops over one of the fences surrounding the yard. She looks distinct from normal zombies and will not attack you.
The Piano Teacher can despawn if you grab a Nuke power-up while she is alive. Avoid Nukes entirely during this step. She also despawns if left too long without being turned.
Step 3: Turn the Piano Teacher
Throw the Psych Grenade at her feet, or shoot her once with Brain Rot. The first Brain Rot shot on the Piano Teacher always activates the effect, even if it was just triggered on a different zombie. This is a unique mechanic for this step.
Step 4: Follow Her to the Piano
Once turned, the Piano Teacher walks to the piano inside the Green House on her own. You do not need to guide her. Just follow and make sure no zombies interfere.
After she reaches the piano, teleport to Past Nuketown. When you arrive, she explodes, which activates the piano and triggers the next phase. The piano tiles will start glowing yellow once everything is ready.
As MysteryHQ pointed out in his walkthrough, if the next round is not a dog round, you can run to the center of the map and finish the round quickly. The Piano Teacher stays alive through round transitions as long as you do not Nuke.
Finding the 8 Blue Notes
After the Piano Teacher explodes, 8 glowing blue notes appear scattered around Present Nuketown (Destroyed). Each note blinks a specific number of times to tell you its position in the sequence. One blink means it is the first note, two blinks means second, and so on up to eight.
You do not actually need to count the blinks if you already know the code. But you do need to interact with each note to progress the step. Walk up to each one and press the interact button when you see the prompt. Here are all 8 locations:
The Bus
Fence Behind Yellow House
Garage Door on Trinity Ave
Rock Near Pack-a-Punch
Bunker Behind Greenhouse
Wooden Panel Near Fence
Trinity Ave Upper Wall
Fence Left of Cul-de-Sac
The notes glow bright blue and make a distinct chime sound when you interact with them. Run a lap around the map hitting each one. The order you collect them does not matter, you just need all 8. MysteryHQ's video guide also covers all locations on camera if you prefer a video guide.
After collecting all 8 notes, travel to Past Nuketown. Head to the Yellow House and look at the wall above the piano. The note letters are now displayed there, confirming the sequence.
Playing the Piano Code
Go to the piano in the Past Nuketown Yellow House. The piano tiles glow yellow when they are ready for input. The game shows 8 numbered keys on screen, labeled 1 through 8 from left to right. You do not need to know anything about music or piano. Just press the numbers in order.
The sequence is: 8, 6, 7, 5, 6, 5, 3, 5. Press each numbered key one at a time at a steady pace. There is a time limit, so do not hesitate too long between presses, but do not rush either.
If You Fail
Messing up the code is not the end of the world. The piano resets and you need to wait roughly one minute for the tiles to glow yellow again. Once they light up, you can re-enter the code. You do not have to redo the blue notes or respawn the Piano Teacher.
Success
When you enter the code correctly, a melody plays and your character gets pushed off the piano bench. That is your confirmation that the step is complete. Step 10 is collecting a Music Sheet by shooting floating zombies that appear around the map, so get your weapon ready. Schrawgs' piano teacher guide covers additional spawn strategies if you are still having trouble with the teacher.
If you are working toward the Chronomancer Dark Ops challenge, do not waste your one paid teleport on the piano step. You will need it later. Use a regular teleport to get between Nuketowns during this part.
Tips and Common Mistakes
Timing the Piano Teacher Spawn
The biggest time waste in this step is spawning the Piano Teacher on the wrong round. She only appears during zombie rounds, not dog rounds. If you sit in the backyard for 60 seconds during a dog round, nothing happens and you have wasted time you could have spent killing Hellhounds.
Plan ahead. If you know a dog round is coming (they follow a predictable pattern), finish the dog round first, then stay in the backyard on the following zombie round. Round 16-17 is the sweet spot specifically because of dog round timing.
Do Not Kill All Zombies
If you kill every zombie before turning the Piano Teacher, the round ends and a new round starts. This can cause timing issues and in some cases has caused the teacher to despawn. Always save at least one regular zombie while you are working on this step.
Brain Rot vs. Psych Grenade
Both work. The Psych Grenade is more foolproof because it is a single throw with no RNG involved. Brain Rot technically always activates on the first shot against the Piano Teacher (a unique exception to normal Brain Rot rules), but if you are nervous about it, just use the grenade. Our mod team prefers the Psych Grenade for consistency.
The Community Agrees: This Step is Annoying
This is not just our opinion. Across Reddit, YouTube comments, and our own Discord server, the piano step is consistently ranked as the most tedious part of the Paradox Junction Easter egg. The 60-second wait, the note hunting, the time-limited code entry. None of these mechanics are difficult, they are just slow and punishing when you fail.
Treyarch clearly designed this as a patience check. Compared to the combat-oriented steps in the EE, the piano step feels like busywork. As Charlie Intel and others have noted, the Paradox Junction EE has some of the best boss fights in recent Zombies history, which makes the slow puzzle steps feel even more out of place. That said, once you have the code memorized and know the note locations, you can knock it out in about 3-4 minutes total. The first time is always the worst.
Full Easter Egg Context
The piano code is steps 8-9 of a 14-step Easter egg. If you are working through the full quest, you should already have your loadout and perks sorted by this point. Check out our Paradox Junction Cursed Mode guide for loadout recommendations that also work well during the main Easter egg.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the piano code in BO7 Paradox Junction?
Press keys 8, 6, 7, 5, 6, 5, 3, 5 on the in-game piano (numbered left to right). In music note terms, that is A, F, G, E, F, E, C, E. The code never changes between matches or attempts. If you fail, just wait for the tiles to glow yellow and enter the same code again.
How do you spawn the Piano Teacher zombie in Black Ops 7?
Go to the Green House backyard on Destroyed Nuketown during a zombie round (not a dog round). Stay there for 60 seconds. The Piano Teacher hops over the fence. Turn her with a Psych Grenade or Brain Rot ammo mod. She will not attack you, so there is no rush. Avoid picking up Nukes while she is alive or she will despawn.
Where are the 8 blue notes in BO7 Paradox Junction?
The notes are on Present Nuketown (Destroyed). Locations: the bus, fence behind the yellow building, garage door on Trinity Ave, rock near Pack-a-Punch, bunker behind the greenhouse, wooden panel near the fence, Trinity Ave upper wall, and the fence left of the cul-de-sac. Each note blinks to show its position in the sequence.
What step of the Paradox Junction Easter egg is the piano code?
Steps 8 and 9 of the 14-step main Easter egg. Step 8 is spawning and turning the Piano Teacher. Step 9 is finding the notes and entering the code. The step opens up right after the swings cutscene disappears.
Can you retry the piano code if you fail in BO7?
Yes. The piano resets after a failed attempt. Wait about one minute for the tiles to glow yellow again, then re-enter the same code (8, 6, 7, 5, 6, 5, 3, 5). You keep your note progress, do not need to respawn the Piano Teacher, and can retry as many times as needed within the same match.
Does Brain Rot always work on the Piano Teacher in BO7?
Yes. The first shot you land on her always triggers Brain Rot, even if you just used the ammo mod on a different zombie. This is a unique mechanic for this specific step. You can also use a Psych Grenade for a guaranteed turn with zero guesswork.
Can the Piano Teacher despawn in BO7 Paradox Junction?
She can. Grabbing a Nuke power-up or leaving her alone for too long causes her to vanish. She will not attack you, so there is no pressure to turn her immediately, but avoid Nukes and do not start a new round before turning her.
What round should you do the piano step on Paradox Junction?
Round 16-17 is the sweet spot. Dog rounds tend to land around this time, so you can plan the 60-second backyard wait for a zombie round right after the dogs. Save one zombie at the end of the round, turn on the Rampage Inducer, head to the backyard, and wait for the Piano Teacher.
