The Agarthan Device is a Wicked tier relic on Totenreich that cycles zombie types every round. Normal, Frost, and Acid zombies rotate in, each with different behavior and resistances. It is one of the harder relics to unlock on the map, requiring the Richtofen side quest, three hidden items from secret rooms, and a 6-wave trial at round 60 difficulty.

TL;DR
  • Wicked tier relic. Cursed Mode Tier 2+, play as Richtofen
  • Collect 3 items from secret rooms: Mr. Peeks, Helmet, Walkie-Talkie
  • Complete the Richtofen side quest and place all 3 items on the throne
  • Survive 6 waves at round 60 difficulty. Zombies only take damage indoors
  • HVT enemies spawn on waves 3 and 6. Toxic Growth is your best friend
  • Do NOT save and quit. Do NOT get Melee Macchiato from Perkaholic

Our team completed this relic in co-op and documented the full process. The trial is significantly harder than Grim or Sinister relics, but manageable with the right setup and positioning. Here is the complete walkthrough with screenshots from our run.

Requirements

The Agarthan Device has more prerequisites than any other Totenreich relic. Make sure you have all of these before starting.

RequirementDetails
Cursed Mode Tier 2+Wicked relics require at least Cursed Mode Tier 2 active on Totenreich.
Play as RichtofenYou must select Richtofen as your operator before starting the match.
Main Easter EggThe main Totenreich Easter Egg must be completed on your account at least once.
Melee MacchiatoRequired to open the barrel during the Richtofen side quest. Must be purchased from the perk machine, not from Perkaholic or other sources (see Known Bugs).
Round 15+The barrel and portal become available from round 15 onward.
!

The trial spawns round 60 zombies regardless of what round you enter the portal. Starting at round 15 means fighting round 60 enemies with a round 15 setup. Get fully kitted before entering: Pack-a-Punch level 3 or higher, all perks, and Golden Armor.

Step 1: Collect the Three Items

You need three items from the Richtofen side quest secret rooms. These rooms appear randomly when teleporting during Cursed Mode. Each room contains one item on the floor or a shelf. The rooms you need are:

ItemRoomLocation in Room
Mr. PeeksLiberty Falls roomOn a surface near the entrance
HelmetRequiem crew roomOn a shelf or table
Walkie-TalkieGroup 935 labBottom left on the floor

The Group 935 lab has a locked door that requires a code. Look for radioactive symbols in the hallway. Two of the five numbered panels (1-5) will have a radioactive symbol underneath. The numbers correspond to letters: 1=A, 2=B, 3=C, 4=D, 5=E. Match the letters to the labeled jars in the room to unlock the door.

The tricky part is room RNG. You cannot choose which secret room you teleport to. Some runs you get all three rooms quickly, others take 20+ rounds of teleporting. Be patient and keep teleporting until you find all three rooms.

!

Collect all three items before starting the Richtofen side quest. You must have the Mr. Peeks, Helmet, and Walkie-Talkie in your inventory before the ghost disappears from the throne, or you will not be able to place them.

The Mr. Peeks figurine is in the Liberty Falls room. Look on the floor near the bed and dresser. It is small and easy to miss in the dark. You need to go prone to pick up both the Mr. Peeks and the Walkie-Talkie, standing over them will not trigger the interact prompt.

The Walkie-Talkie is inside the Group 935 Genetic Lab. After solving the door code, check the bottom left corner of the room on the floor.

The Helmet sits on a shelf in the Requiem crew room. Look at the shelving unit along the wall.

Step 2: Place Items on the Throne

With all three items collected, complete the Richtofen side quest. This involves opening the barrel in Core Foundry (south side of the room, to the left of the Mystery Box) with Melee Macchiato punches from round 15 onward, collecting the core, and triggering the throne room cutscene. You only need Melee Macchiato to break the barrel, no wonder weapon required.

After the Von List ghost disappears from the throne, interact with the throne to place all three items. This opens a red portal in the Dry Dock area of the map, close to PhD Flopper. The portal leads to the Agarthan Device relic trial.

Once the items are placed, a red portal appears in the Dry Dock area. Walk into it to start the Agarthan Device trial.

Step 3: Complete the Trial

The Agarthan Device trial is 6 waves of combat at round 60 difficulty. The core rule: zombies can only be damaged when you are standing indoors. Shooting or meleeing zombies while outdoors does zero damage. This forces you to hold indoor positions for the entire trial.

The six waves work like this:

WaveTypeDetails
1-2StandardRegular round 60 zombies. Clear all kills to advance.
3HVTHigh Value Target (bear enemy) spawns alongside regular zombies. Must kill the HVT to advance.
4-5StandardMore round 60 zombies. Intensity increases.
6HVTFinal wave. Another bear HVT with heavy zombie support. Kill the HVT to complete the trial.
Wave 3 of 6 HVT round during the Agarthan Device trial showing Kill all HVTs objective with heavy combat at the lighthouse

The HVT enemies on waves 3 and 6 are bears. They hit hard and can down you in one or two attacks if you are caught in the open. Trident-wielding enemies are also a serious threat with potential one-hit downs when multiple are present.

Trial Strategy

The indoor-only damage rule makes positioning everything. You need a spot that is indoors, defensible, and gives you room to maneuver when things get hectic.

Wave 4 of 6 inside the lighthouse on Totenreich with Toxic Growth field upgrade creating barriers and zombies being damaged indoors

The lighthouse second floor is the strongest position for this trial. It is indoors, has limited entry points, and gives you clear sightlines on approaching zombies. Our team held this position for all 6 waves.

Recommended Setup

  • Toxic Growth as your field upgrade. It slows incoming zombies at chokepoints, which is critical for surviving HVT waves. Place it at doorways and stairwells to create breathing room
  • Pack-a-Punch level 3 minimum. Level 4 if you have the tier for it. Round 60 zombies are tanky and you need the damage output
  • The wonder weapon (Jotunn Star or melee variant) makes the trial significantly easier. If you are running the melee wonder weapon, use Vampiric Extraction for health sustain
  • Golden Armor for the extra health buffer. You will take hits during HVT waves
  • Full perks. Every perk matters at this difficulty. Prioritize Juggernog, Stamin-Up, PhD Flopper, and Melee Macchiato

Co-op vs Solo

This trial is doable solo but significantly easier with a team. Only one player needs to play as Richtofen and place the three items on the throne, so the rest of the squad can run any operator. In co-op, one player can focus on clearing regular zombies while others handle the HVT. Cover your teammates and call out HVT positions. If playing solo, keep moving between indoor spots and use Toxic Growth to control the flow.

Known Bugs

The Agarthan Device relic has two confirmed bugs that can break your run. Both are easy to avoid if you know about them.

Melee Macchiato Source Bug

Melee Macchiato must be purchased directly from the perk machine. Getting it from Perkaholic, the random perks relic (Dancing Arnie), or Ted tasks can cause the barrel in the Richtofen side quest to not respond to melee hits. If the barrel is not opening, this is almost certainly why. Buy Melee Macchiato from its machine and try again.

Save and Quit Breaks Progress

If you save and quit after collecting any of the three items or after opening the barrel, your progress resets. The barrel seals permanently and cannot be reopened, even if you re-collect the items. You must complete the entire relic from start to finish in a single session.

!

Plan for a long session. Between collecting items from RNG secret rooms, completing the Richtofen side quest, and surviving 6 trial waves, the Agarthan Device can take 45 minutes to over an hour in a single game.

Tips

  • Buy Melee Macchiato from the machine before round 15. Do not use Perkaholic or any other perk source for this specific perk
  • Collect all three items (Mr. Peeks, Helmet, Walkie-Talkie) before triggering the Richtofen side quest cutscene. You cannot place them after the ghost leaves the throne if you did not have them ready
  • Do not save and quit at any point during the relic process. Complete everything in one session
  • The trial is round 60 difficulty even if you enter at round 15. Wait until you are fully set up: Pack-a-Punch 3+, all perks, Golden Armor, wonder weapon
  • Hold the lighthouse second floor during the trial. Toxic Growth at the doorways creates a killbox that handles most of the wave pressure
  • On HVT waves (3 and 6), prioritize the bear. Regular zombies are a distraction. The bear can one-hit you in the open, but Toxic Growth slows it enough to deal damage safely from indoors
  • In co-op, assign roles: one player on HVT damage, others on crowd control. Communication makes the HVT waves much more manageable
  • If you need a solid Zombies loadout for this, check our best BO7 Zombies loadout guide for weapon builds and perk setups that work well at round 60+ difficulty

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Agarthan Device relic do in BO7 Totenreich?

The Agarthan Device is a Wicked tier relic that changes the zombie type that spawns each round. Instead of normal zombies every round, you cycle through Normal, Frost, and Acid zombie variants. Each type has different behavior and resistances.

What do you need to unlock the Agarthan Device relic?

You need Cursed Mode Tier 2 or higher active on Totenreich, to play as Richtofen, to have completed the main Easter Egg at least once, and to have Melee Macchiato purchased from the perk machine (not from Perkaholic or other sources). The trial can be started as early as round 15.

What are the three items needed for the Agarthan Device relic?

You need to collect a Mr. Peeks figurine from the Liberty Falls secret room, a Helmet from the Requiem crew secret room, and a Walkie-Talkie from the Group 935 lab secret room. All three are found in the Richtofen side quest secret rooms that appear randomly during gameplay.

How hard is the Agarthan Device trial?

The trial is 6 waves at round 60 difficulty regardless of what round you start it on. Zombies can only be damaged when you are indoors. Waves 3 and 6 spawn HVT enemies (bears) that can down you quickly in open areas. A full perk loadout, Pack-a-Punch level 3 or higher, and Toxic Growth are strongly recommended.

Can you save and quit during the Agarthan Device relic?

No. If you save and quit after collecting items or opening the barrel, your progress resets and the barrel cannot be reopened. You must complete the entire relic in a single session without saving and quitting.

Why is the barrel not opening for the Agarthan Device relic?

The most common cause is getting Melee Macchiato from a source other than its perk machine. Perkaholic, random perk relics, and Ted tasks can all cause the barrel to not respond. Buy Melee Macchiato directly from the machine. Also make sure you are playing as Richtofen and have reached round 15 or later.
