The Matryoshka Doll is a Sinister tier relic on Astra Malorum, and its effect is one line: your salvage drop rates get cut in half. To unlock it you open the portal to Mars, reach round 40, and blow up three piles of meat on the Mars altar with C4 while a horde is standing on them. That is a very different task from the frustrating timing puzzles on the map’s other relics, and our team found it to be one of the more honest unlocks in Cursed mode.
- Map: Astra Malorum, Cursed Tier 1 or higher, main Easter egg already done
- Open the Mars portal, reach round 40 with C4 as your lethal
- Place one C4 on each of the three meat piles on the Mars altar
- Herd a horde onto the altar and detonate. Mr. Peeks laughs, portal spawns at Machina Astralis
- Clear the 5-wave Field Upgrade trial. Effect: salvage drops are halved
We pulled first-hand notes from our COD Central Zombies team after they unlocked this one. The short version is that the effect scares people more than it should, and the unlock is far less painful than the reputation of Astra Malorum relics suggests. Below is the exact C4 method, the portal location, the best Field Upgrade for the trial, and whether the relic earns a slot.
What the Matryoshka Doll Relic Does
The Matryoshka Doll relic halves your salvage drop rates. Salvage is what you spend on armor plates, equipment, and crafting at the workbench, so cutting it in half means fewer plates, fewer tacticals, and slower upgrades over a long game. It never touches your damage, your perks, or the flow of a round. It only tightens your economy.
This is the detail most guides blur, so it is worth being clear. The salvage cut is the effect you carry when the relic is equipped. It is not the same as the trial rule you play under while unlocking it, where kills only count with a Field Upgrade active. Some write-ups list that Field Upgrade rule as the relic’s effect, and that is wrong. One is how you earn the relic, the other is what it does afterward.
Salvage drops are halved. It slows crafting and armor on long runs, but it never changes how a round actually plays, which makes it one of the softer Sinister downsides.
Requirements
Sort these before you start the round 40 push. The most common reason the relic will not trigger is starting the C4 step without the Mars portal open or the main quest done.
| Requirement | Details |
|---|---|
| Map | Astra Malorum |
| Relic Tier | Sinister (middle tier) |
| Cursed Tier Needed | Tier 1 or higher. We run Tier 3 for stronger weapons, but Tier 1 is enough for the relic. |
| Main Easter Egg | Must be completed at least once so the portal to Mars can be opened. This applies to every relic on the map. |
| Round | Round 40+ for the Mars altar step. |
| Lethal | C4 equipped as your lethal grenade. |
Step 1: Open Mars and Reach Round 40
Matryoshka Doll happens on Mars, so you need the Mars portal open from the main Easter egg before you can start. Once you can travel there freely, the plan is simple: build your setup, keep your points healthy, and grind up to round 40 with C4 slotted as your lethal. We ran Tier 3 Cursed for better weapons, but the relic itself does not care what tier you are on.
The Mars altar is the central circular platform you fight around during the main quest. You do not need any active quest step running for the relic, you just need to be able to reach the altar at round 40 with C4 in hand.
Step 2: C4 the Three Meat Piles
This is the whole trick, and it is refreshingly mechanical. On the Mars altar there are three piles of meat. Walk up to each one and stick a single C4 charge on it, so you have all three placed at once. Do not detonate yet.
Now pull a crowd. Round 40 hordes are huge, so kite a big group of zombies onto the center of the altar until they are packed over the piles, then blow all three C4 at once. When it registers, Mr. Peeks laughs. That laugh is your confirmation that the step counted.
The Mr Peeks laugh (your confirmation sound)
Detonate the C4 on the altar and this laugh confirms the step counted before the portal spawns at Machina Astralis.
Our take: the C4 step is reliable. Most relic triggers on this map get buggy or glitchy half the time, but this one is basically guaranteed not to bug out. If it does not pop, you almost always just needed more zombies stacked on the piles when you detonated.
Step 3: Enter the Portal
After the laugh, the yellow relic portal spawns back at Machina Astralis, the mansion hub on the main map. Head through your Mars portal, return to Machina Astralis, and look along the wall near the cryo pod. Interact with the glowing portal to begin the trial.
Step 4: Survive the Trial
The trial disables every relic and adds one rule: enemies can only be killed while you are using a Field Upgrade. It runs 5 waves, mixing normal kill waves with kill all HVTs waves. When your Field Upgrade is down, you cannot damage anything, so the whole trial is about keeping a charge available.
The Field Upgrade you bring decides how smooth this is. Our clear pick is Frenzied Guard. It draws zombies in and lets you tear through them while it is up, and it recharges automatically in a matter of seconds, so your dead time between charges stays short. Other Field Upgrades work, but the auto recharge on Frenzied Guard is what makes the field-upgrade-only rule easy to live with.
Play it patient. Use a Field Upgrade charge to clear a pocket, hold while it comes back, and repeat through the HVT waves. Because your charge regenerates on its own, you do not strictly need recharge gobblegums or Power Kegs, though they help if you have them.
Clear all 5 waves and the relic is yours. We cleared it comfortably with Frenzied Guard on rotation and never felt at risk.
Is It Worth Equipping?
Our team is high on this one. The salvage cut is real, but it is the kind of downside you feel over a long crafting heavy game rather than something that threatens you in the moment. You never lose a perk, a revive, or firepower. You just build armor and equipment a little slower.
Stacked against the other Sinister options on the map, that is a soft price. In our view, this relic is easily better than the four perk limitation, and it sits in our top three for Astra Malorum. A relic that caps your perks or removes self-revive rewrites how you play every round. Matryoshka Doll only asks you to farm a bit more salvage while you bank Sinister points toward golden armor and the higher Cursed rewards. Those tiers also upgrade the eggs Mr Peeks drops, so the grind pays out twice. If you want to compare it against the map’s other middle tier pick, see our Spider Fang relic guide.
Add in how painless the unlock is, and it becomes an easy include. Between a reliable C4 step and a downside you barely notice mid-round, Matryoshka Doll is one of the least demanding ways to bank Sinister points on Astra Malorum, and after clearing it ourselves it lands firmly in our top three for the map.
All Astra Malorum Relics
Astra Malorum has six Cursed mode relics across the three tiers. For a full breakdown of the relic system and tier rewards, see our What Is Cursed Mode guide. We link each relic guide below as it goes live.
| Tier | Relic | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Grim | Seed | Mystery Box disabled |
| Grim | Gong | Field upgrades charge only from full power-ups |
| Sinister | Spider Fang | Perk prices only ever increase |
| Sinister | Matryoshka Doll | Salvage drop rate halved |
| Wicked | Golden Spork | Enemies deal double damage |
| Wicked | Civil Protector Head | Lose 1 perk every 100 kills |
Tips
- Finish the Astra Malorum main Easter egg first. No relic on the map unlocks without it, and you need it to open the Mars portal.
- Slot C4 as your lethal before the round 40 push so you are not scrambling for it late.
- Place all three C4 on the three meat piles before you detonate. One per pile.
- Stack as many zombies as you can on the altar before blowing the charges. More bodies means a cleaner trigger.
- Listen for the Mr. Peeks laugh. That is your confirmation, and only then should you head back for the portal.
- Run Frenzied Guard for the trial. The auto recharge keeps you almost always able to kill.
- Skip the relic on short crafting light runs. It shines as a low impact way to farm Sinister points, not as a run defining pick.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does the Matryoshka Doll relic do in BO7 Zombies?
The Matryoshka Doll relic halves your salvage drop rates. Every zombie and container drops roughly half the salvage it normally would, which slows down armor plates, equipment, and Pack-a-Punch crafting. It does not change how you fight, it only squeezes your economy, so most players grab it to fill the Sinister tier bar rather than to run it long term.
How do you unlock the Matryoshka Doll relic on Astra Malorum?
Progress the Astra Malorum main Easter egg until the portal to Mars is open, then reach round 40 with C4 as your lethal. On the Mars altar there are three piles of meat. Place one C4 on each pile, herd a large horde into the center of the altar, and detonate. You hear Mr. Peeks laugh, then a yellow relic portal spawns back at Machina Astralis. Enter it and clear the trial.
What tier is the Matryoshka Doll relic in BO7?
Matryoshka Doll is a Sinister tier relic, the middle of the three Cursed tiers. A lot of guides list it as Wicked, which is wrong. The round 40 availability lines up with Sinister, since Grim relics open around round 20 and Wicked relics need round 60 and Cursed Tier 2.
How many C4 do you need for the Matryoshka Doll relic?
Three. There are three piles of meat on the Mars altar, and you place a single C4 charge on each one. Then you pull a horde onto the altar and blow all three at once. We found this step reliable, so if it does not trigger you usually just need more zombies stacked on the piles when you detonate.
What is the Matryoshka Doll relic trial like?
The trial disables all your relics and only lets you kill enemies while a Field Upgrade is active. It runs five waves, mixing standard kill waves with kill all HVTs waves. Between charges you cannot damage anything, so the challenge is managing your Field Upgrade uptime rather than raw firepower.
What is the best Field Upgrade for the Matryoshka Doll trial?
Frenzied Guard. It pulls zombies toward you and lets you clear them fast while it is active, and it recharges on its own in a matter of seconds. We ran Frenzied Guard the whole trial and it was the standout choice, since the auto recharge means very little downtime where you cannot kill.
Is the Matryoshka Doll relic worth equipping in BO7?
We rate it a top three relic for Astra Malorum and would take it over the relic that caps you at four perks. The only cost is slower salvage, which stings on long crafting heavy runs but never changes how a round plays out. If you are farming Sinister tier points, it is one of the least punishing relics to run.
Why is my Matryoshka Doll relic portal not spawning?
The usual reasons are the Mars portal not being open yet, the main Easter egg not being done, or not enough zombies on the meat piles when you detonate. Make sure all three C4 are on the three piles and a full horde is on the altar. Unlike the Spider Fang relic, this step does not suffer from the save and quit bug, so the C4 method is consistent once the setup is right.
