Players whose Black Ops 2 accounts were wrecked by the PS5 lobby exploit are opening the game to a permanent ban notice. They did not cheat. They sat in a public lobby and a hacker rewrote their profile. And for most of them the ban is not real. Close the game, start it again, and you are back online.

What the Ban Notice Says
Since yesterday, threads have been appearing on Reddit and X from players who opened Black Ops 2 and found a ban notice waiting. One r/blackops2 thread is titled simply “Dont play MP right now they are banning people”.
The same notice has turned up on three different profiles, worded identically each time:
“This profile (name) has been permanently banned from playing Call of Duty: Black Ops II online due to a violation of the posted Security and Enforcement Policy.”
The obvious suspicion was that this was done by a hacker, faking a message to scare people. That is half right. The dialog is genuine, it is the game’s own ban screen, naming Activision’s policy and pointing at Activision’s Black Ops II support page. What it is not is proof that your account is gone.
Two of the three screenshots were taken on the Zombies screen, and the notice says “online”, not “multiplayer”. Where it does stick, it costs you the whole online game.
The Ban Is Not Sticking
Then players started dismissing the notice and carrying on. One got it, went back in, and found himself at Prestige 10 Level 55. Another was told his profile had been reverted to its last known level from the database, closed the game, and came back to the Prestige 15 he started the day with. On r/blackops2 a player who logged off hacked woke up repaired, with stats tracking match by match again.
Reply after reply says the same thing. Close it, restart the game, and the online game lets you straight back in. That is not what a permanent ban does.
It is not everyone. A few players say they still cannot get into a match at all, and that resetting their stats in the Barracks changed nothing for them. One of the screenshots doing the rounds turns out to be an account wearing a modder’s clan tag, which is its own story. So some of these bans are probably real. Most of what people are panicking about is not.
What Nobody Has Explained
The notice tells you a policy was violated. It does not say how that decision was made, why it fires at the victims of the exploit, or why it clears on a restart. Neither Activision nor Iron Galaxy has explained any of it.
A ban that lifts when you close the game is not a ban. The accounts that come back land on Prestige 10, the rank a repair leaves behind. A handful of players are still locked out, and nobody has said why those and not the rest.
None of this is only a hacker problem. Iron Galaxy’s ports launched on 9 July and the lobbies were compromised within days, at full price and without the protection a public lobby needed on day one.
What to Do If You Are Hit
Screenshot the notice before you dismiss it, then close the game completely and start it again. Check whether you can get into a lobby. For most players that is the end of it.
If your rank was rewritten but you can still play, a reset to level 1 in the Barracks clears the invalid profile. It costs you everything you earned and some players say it did nothing for them, so wait a night first. Accounts are being repaired on their own overnight, back to Prestige 10 with stats tracking again.
If you don’t want to risk running into cheaters in BO2, it’s best to not play until the state of the game has improved.
