Toxic Growth is one of the strongest field upgrades in Black Ops 7 Zombies, and it is at its best when you are holding a tight camping spot. The build that gets the most out of it runs Pollination, with Green Thumb and Extra Charge.

We have run Toxic Growth and tested every Major and Minor on the current patch. Here is the loadout that actually held up, why the other augments fall short, and how far into the research grind you really need to go.

TL;DR
  • Verdict: Pollination is the top Major. Enemies eliminated by the growth explode and take out the zombies stacked up behind them, which keeps your choke point clear and makes the growth last longer.
  • Best Minors: Green Thumb and Extra Charge. Green Thumb keeps the growth alive under constant traffic, Extra Charge gives you a second one on standby for when the first expires.
  • How far to grind: you only need Pollination and Extra Charge for the core build. Running both Minors together needs Extra Slot, the final node, and Pollination already puts you near 70 percent.
  • Watch out for: it does almost nothing to HVTs and bosses. This is a normal-horde tool, not a boss-damage tool.

Significantly increases the growth's health so it survives longer.

Extra Charge augment icon
Extra Charge

Increases Max Charges by one for a growth on standby.

Running both Minors at once needs Extra Slot, the final research node. Before that, pair Pollination with Extra Charge on its own.

Pollination is the piece that turns Toxic Growth from a speed bump into a wall. When a zombie eliminated by the growth explodes, it usually clears the two or three pushing in behind it before they ever reach the thorns. That means fewer enemies chip away at the growth, so it survives longer, and in a tight camping spot that chain reaction does more damage than any other Major here. Green Thumb then keeps the growth standing under pressure, and Extra Charge means you are never caught with an empty lane while you wait for the next one.

What Toxic Growth Actually Does

Toxic Growth summons a patch of thorns in front of you. Enemies that walk into it are slowed and take Toxic damage for as long as they stand in it. That is the whole loop, and it is why the field upgrade lives and dies on camping strategies. Park yourself in a doorway or a tight room, drop the growth across the only way in, and most of the horde is slowed and bleeding before it can touch you. It returned from Black Ops Cold War, where the community already rated it highly for high-round play, and it is one of the few genuinely new-feeling defensive options in Black Ops 7.

If you’re playing co-op and you and your teammates all run Toxic Growth, you can stack up plenty of charges between you, or cover a huge area, which makes it even better in co-op games. It only works against zombies, so teammates walking through Toxic Growth won’t get slowed down. HVTs and bosses walking into Toxic Growth do slow down temporarily, but don’t count on it taking down the HVT or boss on its own.

“I do think this is the most powerful field upgrade or one of the most powerful field upgrades in the game.”

How to Unlock Every Toxic Growth Augment

Toxic Growth unlocks at Player Level 29. Every field upgrade carries eight augments, four Majors and four Minors, and by default you equip one of each. Researching all eight to 100 percent unlocks Extra Slot, the ninth node, which lets you run two Minors at once. Augment research itself opens at Zombies Level 11 and fills from in-match XP rather than an elimination counter, and a player XP boost token can speed progress up.

The Toxic Growth research path. Blue diamonds are Majors, gold circles are Minors, and Extra Slot is the final node at 100 percent.

You cannot jump straight to a single node. The grid fills in its own order as you play, so the real question is how deep you have to go, not which augment to rush. The good news is that our whole build sits within reach without finishing everything. You need Extra Charge and Pollination to run the core of it, and once Pollination is done you are already about 70 percent of the way through the grid.

That last stretch is worth it. Because Pollination puts you near 70 percent, the jump to 100 percent for Extra Slot is short, and Extra Slot is the node that lets Green Thumb and Extra Charge sit in the two Minor slots together. If you would rather stop early, Pollination with Extra Charge on a single Minor slot is still a strong loadout and skips the final grind. Only one research project runs across the whole screen at a time, so pushing this grid to 100 percent means everything else waits, and that trade is easy to justify here given how much of the value is packed into Pollination.

Pollination

Zoochory

Pollination is the clear pick and it is not close. The explosions clear the zombies stacking up behind the one that dies, which keeps your choke point breathing and stretches the growth’s lifespan at the same time. It is the only Major that meaningfully raises how much the growth takes down rather than just changing its shape.

Cordyception is our second best. It charms the first zombie to enter the growth so it turns on the others, and in a tight spot that turned zombie can physically block the rest from reaching you. It is not our go-to because Pollination simply clears more, but if you like the idea of a bouncer holding your doorway, this is a real pick.

Urticant widens the growth and keeps enemies slowed after they leave it, but it does not add any damage, it only makes the patch bigger. It has a use if you want to smother a large stretch of the map in thorns, though for the tight-spot camping this build is built around, a wider growth is not what you need.

Zoochory is the weakest of the four. It attaches the growth to a normal or special enemy that walks in, and in our testing that just carried the growth away from where we wanted it, usually into the middle of the horde where it did nothing for us. Skip it.

Extra Charge

Green Thumb
B
Plant Food
C
Ankle Shredder

Extra Charge is the Minor we run by default. A second charge means you can drop a fresh growth the moment the first one expires, so your choke point is never open. Green Thumb is the one to pair with it once Extra Slot is unlocked. It significantly raises the growth’s health, and since the growth eventually breaks down as zombies keep piling into it, more health buys you more time sitting safely in a tight space. Together they are the reason the build holds up on longer runs: one keeps a growth in reserve, the other keeps the active one alive.

Plant Food gives eliminations a chance to drop fruit that overcharges your health, up to around 400 in our testing, with a single fruit adding about 50. It is fine, but it solves a problem this build does not really have. When you are camping properly, zombies are not reaching you to deal damage in the first place, so extra healing is a slot spent on the wrong thing. Ankle Shredder makes enemies moving through the growth even slower, which sounds on-theme but misses the point: we are not trying to slow zombies that are already in the growth, we are trying to eliminate them before they get through. Neither earns a slot over our pair.

The Ashes of the Damned Plant Trick

On maps with Aether Plants, Ashes of the Damned in particular, Toxic Growth does something its tooltip never mentions. Drop a growth on a sprout and it grows in about 10 seconds instead of the roughly 30 it takes on its own. That alone makes it worth carrying on those maps if you farm the plants. Spraying an Aether Plant and then placing a growth on it also boosts what the plant pays out, and this comes from the base field upgrade, not from any augment, so you do not need a single node researched to use it.

Placed on a sprout, Toxic Growth cut the grow time to roughly 10 seconds in our runs.

Two things to know before you build a farm around it. The reward payout took a hit in the Season 1 patch, which launched December 4, 2025, and the notes specifically called out reducing drop rates for high-value items in early rounds from Aether Plants fertilized by Toxic Growth. Players confirmed the early-round jackpots dried up right after. The trick still works, the big pulls just land later now rather than on round 2.

“They nerfed the hell out of it. You can still get good stuff, but it’s tiered to the later rounds. Early Rounds you get like 50x and 250x salvage, 100 points, green, MAYBE blue weapons, if you’re lucky you get a wrench. Mid Rounds, blue wrenches and tier 1 pap crystals.”

We did not run a fresh round-by-round reward table ourselves after the patch, so the exact drops at each round range are still worth checking in game. What is clear is that the current version rewards patience: farm the plants deeper into a run rather than expecting a Pack-a-Punch crystal on round 2.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best Toxic Growth augment build in BO7?

Pollination as the Major, with Green Thumb and Extra Charge as the two Minors. Running both Minors at once needs Extra Slot, the final research node, so before that you pair Pollination with Extra Charge on its own.

Do you need to fully research Toxic Growth?

No. Pollination plus Extra Charge covers the core of what makes it strong. Full research at 100 percent only matters because it unlocks Extra Slot so you can run a second Minor, and by the time you have Pollination you are already about 70 percent of the way there, so finishing it is a short hop rather than a full grind.

Does Toxic Growth still boost plant rewards on Ashes of the Damned?

It still works, but the Season 1 patch reduced the high-value early-round drops, so the best rewards now show up in later rounds rather than on round 2. Placing a growth on a sprout also speeds it up, growing in about 10 seconds instead of roughly 30.

Does Toxic Growth hurt your teammates in co-op?

No. The growth only affects enemies, so one or two players can lay it across the entry points without any friendly fire. That is a big part of why it works so well on a four-player team.

Does Toxic Growth take down bosses and HVTs?

Not really. In our runs HVTs walked through it and survived, which is expected. Toxic Growth is built for clearing normal zombies at a choke point, not for boss damage, so bring a different answer for the big targets.

Does Toxic Growth cause FPS drops?

Some players report a noticeable frame-rate loss while a growth is active, with no confirmed fix beyond lowering settings. We did not measure a drop ourselves, so treat it as something to watch on lower-end hardware rather than a guarantee.
