Wisp Tea summons a small companion that fights alongside you, but without augments it barely moves the needle. The augments are what decide whether it is a damage tool, a safety net, or a utility pick for Easter eggs.
We ran every Wisp Tea Major and Minor across normal survival and high-round runs, including testing Mask of Salvation against the Focusing Stone relic. Here is what held up.
- Verdict: Mask of Wrath is the strongest damage Major. Pair it with Extension and Haste once Extra Slot unlocks for the most uptime.
- Base numbers: The Wisp spawns on a cooldown after kills. Without any augments, each spawn lasts 30 seconds and chips away at individual zombies at roughly 20% health per tick at higher rounds.
- Best Minors: Extension first, always. It doubles the Wisp’s lifetime from 30 seconds to about 60. Haste is the second slot once you have Extra Slot, shortening the gap between spawns.
- Solo exception: Mask of Salvation with Extension and Haste. It can revive you up to three times per game, but it only procs while the Wisp is active, so the uptime augments are not optional.
- Easter egg or relic run: Swap in Zombie Sitter. It held the last zombie for 9 minutes and 20 seconds in our test.
The Best Wisp Tea Augment Build
The demon does more damage.
Increases the Wisp's lifetime.
Decreases the cooldown before a Wisp can be summoned.
Mask of Salvation is a real alternative for solo runs. It does not out-damage Mask of Wrath, but it can pull you back from a down up to three times per game.
Mask of Wrath is the pick when damage is the goal. The demon form hits harder than the base Wisp, and the difference shows in higher rounds where zombie health scales up. Extension goes in first because doubling the active window from 30 to 60 seconds makes every other augment choice more relevant. Haste fills the second Minor slot once Extra Slot unlocks, cutting the time between spawns so the Wisp is in play more often.
Best Wisp Tea Build for Solo Survival
The fox can revive you while active. This can be done up to three times.
Increases the Wisp's lifetime.
Decreases the cooldown before a Wisp can be summoned.
This build only saves you when the Wisp is active at the moment you go down. Extension and Haste are not optional here. Also: do not run this with Focusing Stone equipped as a relic.
The catch with Mask of Salvation is that the Wisp has to be out when you get downed. Without Extension and Haste, the Wisp spends more time on cooldown than active, so the revive window is narrow. We tested it on normal survival and it worked as advertised: the fox stepped in, we were back up, and the game notified us that 2 uses remained.
Best Wisp Tea Build for Easter Eggs and Relic Hunting
The maiden does not attack but will periodically heal you.
The Wisp will distract and avoid damaging the last zombie in the round until the round times out.
Increases the Wisp's lifetime.
The Major is genuinely flexible here. Zombie Sitter is the whole point of the build. Benevolence fits because the Wisp stays passive and cannot accidentally interfere with whatever step you are working on.
The base Wisp already refuses to finish the last zombie off, so this is not about the round ending early. What Zombie Sitter changes is where that zombie is and what it is doing: instead of chasing you around while you work a step, it gets pulled to the Wisp and parked. In our test it stayed parked for 9 minutes and 20 seconds, which is more than enough for any step we have run. The one thing to keep in mind is that it stays where the Wisp caught it, so note the spot if you want to flip the round afterwards.
Benevolence is the safest Major choice here because the maiden does not attack. Mask of Wrath or Mask of Distraction will still do damage in the background, and an active offensive Wisp pulling zombies around is one more thing to think about mid-step. If you prefer damage or revive safety over a fully passive Wisp, swap in whichever Major fits your run.
What Wisp Tea Actually Does
The in-game description is: “Summon a companion Wisp after killing zombies.” What it leaves out is how the summon is actually earned. Treyarch’s own Black Ops 7 augment breakdown spells it out: the Wisp arrives after you kill a number of zombies, the count matters more than how fast you get there, and high-damage tools like Field Upgrades and Equipment bring it in sooner. Once it is out it fights for around 30 seconds, and then it is two minutes before you can have it again.
We tested the base perk at zero augments across several rounds. The Wisp chips away at individual zombies at roughly 20% of their health per tick at higher rounds, which is noticeable but not a round-clearing tool on its own. In a real horde it will pick off the odd zombie at the edge, but it is not going to save you from a train without augments.
Timing from our own tests: without any augments the Wisp spawned at 5:13 and was gone by 5:43, confirming the 30-second base. Without Haste, our gap between spawns ran close to 2.5 minutes, which is the two-minute cooldown plus the half minute the Wisp is out. So the numbers hold up in a real match. It also means the perk is active for a small fraction of any given round, which is why the augments change it so much.
How to Unlock Every Wisp Tea Augment
The research grid runs three rows deep. Augments unlock row by row, so you work through the first three before row two opens, and through row two before row three. The nine slots look like this based on our unlock order:
- Row 1: Extension (Minor), Mask of Wrath (Major), Haste (Minor)
- Row 2: Mask of Salvation (Major), Zombie Sitter (Minor), Mask of Distraction (Major)
- Row 3: Fetcher (Minor), Mask of Benevolence (Major), Extra Slot
Extension is the first thing you unlock and it is also one of the two must-haves in the build. Both recommended Minors, Extension and Haste, sit in row 1, so you have them early. Running them together is the part that waits: the second Minor slot only opens with Extra Slot, at the very end of row 3. Mask of Wrath is also in row 1. The solo build’s key piece, Mask of Salvation, is row 2.
If you are not yet running Wisp Tea’s research, it is worth starting. Extension and Mask of Wrath are both row 1 unlocks and they change the perk from a minor background effect into something worth building around.
All Major Augments for Wisp Tea Ranked
Mask of Wrath turns the Wisp into a demon that hits harder. We did not see a dramatic moment where it suddenly cleared a full horde by itself, but at higher rounds where zombie health scales, the extra damage is consistent. If you want the Wisp to contribute offensively, this is the one.
Mask of Salvation changes the form to a fox that can revive you while active, up to three times. It earns the A slot because it has no equivalent elsewhere in the build, not because it is always reliable. The core limitation is uptime: the Wisp has to be out at the moment you go down. That is the whole of the r/CODZombies case that Wisp Tea is one timing change away from A tier, where a player describes clearing a boss fight only because Mask of Salvation picked them up, on the fifth attempt, after the Wisp failed to show up in the other four. With Extension and Haste that window is wide enough to make it a real safety tool for solo. In co-op a teammate does the same job at no cost, so drop it for Mask of Wrath.
The menu never mentions the part that matters most. When the fox picks you up, the rest of your perks come with you. We went down on round 10 holding ten of them and stood back up with nine, every one still there except Wisp Tea itself, which is the perk that spent itself saving you. Our health was back to full and the counter had dropped to one use left, our second save of that match. For a solo run that is the difference between losing everything you bought and losing a single perk.
Mask of Distraction summons a monkey that pulls zombies in and deals area damage in the cluster. It is a decoy grenade with a damage bonus attached. We would not run it as a primary choice, but it is not dead weight if you are unlocking toward row 3 and want to slot something in the meantime.
Mask of Benevolence removes all offensive behavior and switches the Wisp to periodic healing. It has a niche as a pure support major if you pair it with Fetcher and Extension, so the Wisp picks up power-ups and heals you without interfering with your kills. If that support-only role fits how you play it is a fine pick. Most runs are better served by damage or survivability.
All Minor Augments for Wisp Tea Ranked
Extension doubles the Wisp’s active time from 30 seconds to about 60. That is the single biggest improvement you can make to this perk. It goes in every build, every time.
Haste shortens the cooldown between spawns. Its value is highest when you are running Mask of Salvation, since the revive only fires if the Wisp is out, and shorter cooldowns mean more windows where it can save you. It also pairs naturally with Mask of Wrath: more uptime means more ticks of damage per round. The default pair once Extra Slot is unlocked is Extension and Haste.
Zombie Sitter pulls the last zombie to the Wisp and parks it there, out of your way, until the round times out. In our test it stayed put for 9 minutes and 20 seconds. If you are running Easter eggs or hunting relics and want to work a step without a zombie chewing on you, this is the minor you want. It does not matter which Major you pair it with.
Fetcher sends the Wisp to collect power-ups for you, except nukes. It only earns its slot if you are running a camping strategy where zombies die outside your reach and you cannot get to the drops. In a run where you move around, the power-ups come to you naturally anyway.
Which Build to Run in Each Situation
| Situation | Major | Minors | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard or high rounds | Mask of Wrath | Extension, Haste | Consistent damage with maximum uptime |
| Solo (survival) | Mask of Salvation | Extension, Haste | Revive safety up to 3 times per game; Haste keeps the Wisp active when you need it |
| Easter eggs or relic hunting | Any (Benevolence for passive play) | Zombie Sitter, Extension | Zombie Sitter parks the last zombie out of your way for ~9 minutes so you can work a step in peace |
| Camping strategy | Mask of Wrath | Extension, Fetcher | Fetcher collects drops from kills outside your spot; Mask of Wrath keeps working while you hold position |
Where Wisp Tea Sits in the Perk Order
A real Zombies run buys every perk it can afford, so the question is not whether to run Wisp Tea, it is when to prioritize it. In the standard perk order it sits behind the core survival picks. Jugger-Nog, Speed Cola, and Stamin-Up come first because they directly affect how long you survive and how fast you can react. Wisp Tea adds a companion that helps, but it does not replace any of those.
Once the essentials are covered, Wisp Tea moves up the list quickly. The Wisp is a free damage and utility source that costs nothing in combat after you buy the perk. In a run with Essence to spare, buying it earlier than you otherwise would is not a mistake, especially if you have Extension unlocked and the Wisp will actually be running for a full minute per spawn.
In Cursed runs, double-check your relic setup before committing to Mask of Salvation. As noted above, Focusing Stone breaks it. That is a wasted Major on a run type where every resource slot matters.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Mask of Salvation work if you have Focusing Stone equipped in BO7?
No. Focusing Stone takes your self-revive away, and the game counts the fox as one, so the two cancel each other out. This bites hardest on Cursed runs, where you pick relics for what they give you and not for what they quietly switch off, so check your relic setup before you spend the Major slot on Salvation.
Does the Wisp steal your kills in BO7 Zombies?
Yes, and no augment turns that off. Treyarch describes the Wisp as targeting all zombie types indiscriminately, so it will take kills you wanted during a camo grind or an Insta-Kill. Mask of Benevolence is the only Major that removes the problem, because the maiden heals instead of attacking. That is the one real reason to run our lowest-ranked Major.
Extension or Haste if you can only run one Minor augment?
Extension. Haste shortens the cooldown, but the Wisp still needs the same number of kills before it returns, so cutting the timer pays off less than the menu suggests. Extension makes every spawn you do get twice as long, which is the bigger gain until Extra Slot lets you stop choosing.
Do you need to finish the whole Wisp Tea research path?
No. The two augments that carry the build, Extension and Mask of Wrath, are both in row 1, so the perk earns its slot long before the grid is done. The last row buys you Extra Slot, which only matters if you want a second Minor. Since the game runs one research at a time, everything past row 1 here is competing with a perk you have not started yet.
